Scholarships

Jack & Carney Fatland

Jack was born in Condon, Oregon, and graduated from Condon High School and Oregon State University. He served in the Navy in World War II and then in the Korean War. When he returned from the Korean War, he took over the family business, a tire business that was established in Condon in 1919. Today their two sons, Chris and Tom, run the business—making it a three generation endeavor. Jack served for 25 years on the District 251 school board, served as a Scout Master for many years and was active with the Alumni Association.

Carney was born in Omak, Washington, and grew up in Kinzua. She graduated high school from St Helen's Hall in Portland. She attended Oregon State University for two years. She and Jack were married in 1948. Carney devoted her time to raising their three boys and two girls. She was active in the Catholic Church and served on the Food Pantry Board for many years. Jack and Carney were very active in many organizations supporting the community of Condon. In 1995, Jack gave the first $100 to the "Condon Dollars for Scholars", in order for the chapter to join the national organization.

Bill & Annabelle Jaeger

Bill and Annabelle farmed north of Condon for many years. Bill served on many boards in the area including the Columbia Basin Electric, the Bank of Eastern Oregon and the Oregon Wheat Commission. His motto was, “There is no limit to the good a man can do if he doesn't care who gets the credit." That fit him to a “T".

He did serve in his quiet way and many would not even know he did. He was active in the St. John Catholic Church, the Condon Elks, the Mikkalo Grange, the Wheat League, and the Civil Air Patrol. He was always appreciated for his respect for others and his straight-forward. upright approach to life, his honesty and his traditional, respectful contributions to his community.

Annabelle was also active in many organizations including the St. John Catholic Church, the St. John Altar Society, the Mikkalo Grange, the Sorority, The Gilliam County Historical Society, the Wheat League and the Lady Elks. She was always giving to the Condon Scholarship Foundation in memory of someone who had passed away. She kept the accounting books for the ranch and was always ready to help around the ranch. She liked to play pinochle and taught anyone that wanted to learn, including her grandchildren, before they could even count.

College was important to both of them. They helped any grandchild that wanted to go onto college. It might not always have been money, but they would fill up their vehicles with fuel, so they could at least come home and visit the ranch. They were able to attend one Grandson's graduation from Oregon State University before they passed.

Shirley was born in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from High school in Newberg. Bob and Shirley were married in 1955. They had three sons and three daughters. Bob worked for Flatt's Truck Service and also served as a custodian at the Condon Grade School. Shirley was a cook in the Condon school system for 27 years. The family named "Condon Dollars for Scholars" as the charity of choice when Bob and Shirley were killed as a result of an automobile accident in 2002.

Bob & Shirley Kackley

Bob was born in Condon. He attended schools in Condon and in Ukiah for a couple of years. He served in the Merchant Marines for four years and with the Navy for eight years during World War II and the Korean War.

Shirley was born in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from High school in Newberg. Bob and Shirley were married in 1955. They had three sons and three daughters. Bob worked for Flatt's Truck Service and also served as a custodian at the Condon Grade School. Shirley was a cook in the Condon school system for 27 years. The family named "Condon Dollars for Scholars" as the charity of choice when Bob and Shirley were killed as a result of an automobile accident in 2002.

Carl Myers

Carl was born in Condon. He attended schools in Condon and graduated from Oregon State University in 1933. He was married to Roberta and they had one son and one daughter. After serving in the Air Force during World War U, he returned to Condon where he operated the family wheat ranch. He was active in the community and a strong supporter of education, serving for 42 years as a member of the local school board and the Gilliam County Education Service District. This scholarship is sponsored by the Condon Alumni.

Clayton Morgan

Clayton was born in Kentucky. He attended schools in southeastern Kentucky and attended Lee's College in Jackson, Kentucky, where he played ball. He served in the South Pacific in the army for four years. He was married to Lorraine and they had one daughter and two sons. For 22 years they resided in Condon. Probably best known as owners of the Shoestring Drive-In. Many young people received their first job experience at the Drive-In. He also owned an insurance agency. He was a member of the Condon United Church of Christ, the Odd Fellows, American Legion and the Elks Lodge. This scholarship was started with memorial funds and continues to be sponsored by his sons, Keith and Kevin Morgan.

John Tierney

This scholarship was started by memorial funds and continues to be sponsored by his wife, Dorothy Tierney.

Lynne Turney

This scholarship was set up with a memorial fund, set up in 2000, making it possible to award through the year 2004.

Ferman A. (Tub) Warnock

Ferman—or “Tub” as he was called—was born at Enterprise, Oregon. He attended Enterprise schools, joining the U.S. Navy during his senior year. Following his service in the Navy, Tub attended Eastern Oregon State College graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. After many summers of schooling, he received his superintendent's credential and Master’s Degree. He was married to Janice Frost and they moved to Alsea, Oregon, to Tub's first school. Tub and Janice had two children. In 1952 they moved to Condon, and for the next 37 years Tub dedicated his life to creating a highly respected small school district. He would do all he could to help students further their education. This scholarship is sponsored by the Condon Alumni.

John Weimar

He was a life-long Clem area rancher.
